Rising Damp Repairs in Perth
Rising damp is a common issue in Perth’s older double-brick homes, and can lead to mortar deterioration, internal plaster damage and long-term structural movement if left untreated. Federation Tuckpointing® inspects brickwork affected by rising damp and identifies whether the cause relates to failed damp-course protection, blocked cavities or external moisture conditions before recommending repairs.
Signs Your Brick Wall May Have Rising Damp
Here’s some obvious signs of rising damp in your home:
- Bubbling or flaking paint,
- Bubbling render,
- Bubbling plaster,
- Moss or mold growth,
- A damp odor or musty smell,
- Rotting skirting or flooring,
- Crumbling bricks, Fretting mortar, Tuckpointing falling off.
What Causes Rising Damp in Brick Walls?
Rising damp occurs when moisture travels upward through brickwork from ground level. This usually happens where original damp-course protection has failed, cavities are blocked with rubble, or external ground levels bridge the damp barrier.

Our Rising Damp Repair Process
We begin by testing your walls with moisture meters to identify the exact source of dampness.
From there, we recommend the right repair method for your home. In most Perth homes, we use a mechanical damp-course system. This involves removing the lowest course of bricks, clearing the cavity of rubble, installing a new damp-proof barrier, and re-laying the bricks. This solution is long-lasting and guaranteed.
Rising Damp Repair Methods Used in Perth Homes
There are different damp proofing treatments available depending on what is required to solve the rising damp issue. Perth buildings have different types of brick walls that require different repair approaches. We assess the condition of the damp course and cavity before recommending the most appropriate solution.
- Silicone injection method procedure:
- With silicone injection, holes are drilled into the bricks, through which the silicone is pumped. The silicone then fills all the capillaries of the brick. The holes are drilled approx 100mm apart and these can be noticeable once the job has been completed. The cost of this method may be cheaper however without the cavity being cleaned, and is much less likely to be effective.
- Mechanical method procedure:
- The bottom layer of bricks are cut out, the cavity is cleaned of rubble, a plastic and aluminum membrane is put in place and the bricks are then re-laid. For internal walls, we also then re-plaster the wall, ready for painting. This approach restores proper damp-course protection and is considered the most reliable long-term solution for rising damp in double-brick Perth homes.
